One of the most common complaints I hear about is the nuisance caused by barking dogs. This is usually caused by a dog that is outside alone for extended periods of time.

It’s not surprising that these dogs are making so much noise. Dogs have been bred to be protectors and defenders. When left outside they are only following their instincts. This is most notable in the dog that receives no leadership or guidance from its owner. When the dog is outside, she feels it is her responsibility to guard and protect. However, without the guidance from the owner, the dog (in our eyes) does a poor job of distinguishing between real and imagined danger.

Additionally, dogs that are outside for extended periods of time feel abandoned by their owner. The stress over being forced out of the pack will result in further anxiety and increased barking.

Keep your dog in the house and a part of the family. If you keep your dog outside because you are afraid she will damage your home, proper training and confinement can protect your home while still making your dog feel safe and secure. The installation of a dog door is an excellent way to have the best of both worlds. People may think that their dog wants to be outside in the fresh air. However, install a dog door and notice that when your dog has the option she will spend over 90% of her time indoors sleeping. This is because your dog has a strong denning instinct.

Dog owners tell me they leave their dog outside as a guard dog. Your dog will be a much more effective protector if she is in the home. When she is out in the yard barking, no one will be able to tell if she is barking at real or imagined danger. Additionally, anyone who wanted to steal from your home could just go in the front door as they would be safe from the dog in the backyard.
